Olive and Daphne's 1/4 acre

I moved onto this 1/4 acre section in the village about 3 years ago. Though there was much work to be done on the house itself, my first priority was to address the neglected orchard in the back and the lack of veggie garden.

I was given the most wonderful birthday gift from my parents of a garden consultation and plan by Jason Ross of Sutherland Nursery in Waitati. He came to the property, listened to my aspirations for the section, accessed the property, looked at the soil quality and came back with a beautiful plan. This gave me the means the the confidence to move forward and dig into my section. In fact I was so successful that at its peak, my property has provided me with up to 95% of my food!!

Daphne and Olive are my two hens which have done a marvelous job preparing the garden soil between crops. They are shifted around from plot to plot in their chicken tractor (more a chicken tank). I've really enjoyed learning about the joys of chicken ownership.

I've recently discovered a new resource in my neighbourhood: sea salt! I get 2.5 litres of seawater, stick it in a pot and put it on top of my stove when I have a fire going. It simmers away for several hours and once all of the water has evaporated I am left with anywhere from 1/4 - 1 cup of beautiful salt.
