So this week's excuse to be outside is to harvest my weedy plum tree. Though not quite the handsome specimen I'd want to show off, she proves herself with the quantity and quality of the fruit produced. I keep thinking each season is her last and the overloaded tree is her swan song, however she continues year after year to provide me with more plums than I know what to do with.
My attempt to use the plums this year include:
Preserving
I'm not so much a jam and jelly maker......but I'm thinking a good chutney would be worth a try this season. If anyone has any great recipes they would like to share I'd love to hear from you. Email me at info@localfood.co.nz.
Drying
I'm taking full advantage of the dehydrator, drying as many plums as possible. They keep so well and are great additions to baking throughout the rest of the year, as well as a great little treat to nibble on just on their own.
Perhaps another go at wine making
As reported in my last entry, my last attempt at making wine was such a success PLUS I realise that if I want wine in a few years time I best keep making it.
Sharing
I'm kind of thinking that my plum tree is like the fishes and the loaves. It seems to keep providing without any sign of running out. I've put the word out to friends and family that it is harvest time and many have taken up the offer. Food really does bring people together. I've had some great catch ups while harvesting. It also kind of reminds me of my summer days as a fruit picker. I have great memories of laughing, eating and occasionally picking fruit.
I wish you all happy harvesting. Enjoy!
